Two models, unique performance: all drive train and chassis components underline the motorsport roots of BMW M. Complemented by the true X character, they ensure M typical driving pleasure on any terrain.
High-performance M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder petrol engine.
The M TwinPower Turbo inline 6-cylinder petrol engine features superior power delivery and silky-smooth running coupled with a sporty engine sound. With Double-VANOS, Valvetronic, High-Precision Injection and two turbochargers, it generates 353 kW (480 hp) – in the Competition model even 375 kW (510 hp).
M Carbon precision strut.
The M Carbon precision strut increases frontend rigidity and contributes to a greater steering precision and accuracy. The premium quality carbon fibre reinforced polymer component is extremely lightweight and creates a genuine motor sport atmosphere when the bonnet is up. In this way, the sporty potential is also expressed particularly well here.
M specific suspension.
The M specific suspension highlights the vehicle's great dynamic potential. In addition to the three driving modes COMFORT, SPORT and SPORT+, the driver can also choose between three different Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) settings in order to adapt the level of stabilising support to suit their preferred style of driving.
M xDrive.
BMW M xDrive and Active M differential guarantee maximum traction and driving dynamics in both sporty use and everyday life. Thanks to the M specific technology, the vehicle can always be precisely directed and safely controlled on any surface and even when accelerating strongly out of tight bends.
8-speed M Steptronic transmission.
The 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic offers numerous shifting options: from extremely dynamic to particularly comfortable, and smooth to fuel-saving. The driver can shift manually using the gear lever or the gearshift paddles on the steering wheel, or put the vehicle into automatic mode and let the transmission do the work.
M Servotronic.
In every driving situation, M Servotronic delivers the right steering power, by adjusting to suit the current driving speed. In addition, it delivers a direct and precise steering feel at any speed. The system is M specifically adjusted and offers three different settings that can be selected with the push of a button.
M compound brakes.
As a result of the use of different materials, the M Compound brake achieves not only outstanding deceleration values, but also high stability and a long service life, as well as a reduction in weight that has a positive effect on agility, dynamics and acceleration. The brake callipers in Blue metallic with M lettering mark the M specific high-performance brake system. Due to the specific design, temporary noises can occur occasionally after a long, low or extremely high load, which disappear again after a short time. In order to avoid functional noise, it is appropriate to load the brake at regular intervals with some stronger braking. With moisture on the brake discs, the brake system can be braked dry to avoid noise. The functional noises have no influence on the performance, operational safety and stability of the brake.
M Sport exhaust system.
The M Sport exhaust system delivers a dynamic sound that can be modified via the integrated exhaust valve mechanism. The SPORT and SPORT+ programmes, which can be selected via the Driving dynamics buttons, are accentuated by an even more intense engine sound, while the comfort-oriented programme prioritises more discreet engine acoustics.

M kidney grille.
The striking M kidney grille in Black high-gloss with model designation dominates the dynamic M style design of the front end. The Black high-gloss double slats take a visual cue from the characteristic Double-spoke style of the M light alloy wheels. The M kidney grille makes a bold statement about the vehicle's sporty ambitions and hints at the immense power simply waiting to be unleashed.
“X3 M Competition” designation.
The black “X3 M Competition” designation on the rear is an indication of the vehicle's high driving dynamic potential.
M gills.
The characteristic M gills element with the model designation, which adds a pronounced three-dimensional athletic touch, underscores the vehicle's impressive potential and gives a tantalising foretaste of the extraordinary driving experience that awaits. It exemplifies the dynamic combination of technical perfection and breathtaking design that has been synonymous with M vehicles since day one.
M exterior mirrors.
The aerodynamically optimised M exterior mirrors are a significant part of the sporty and dynamic M design. Attached to the body by an indicated double-bridge design, they underscore the beautiful aesthetics of the vehicle and convey a sense of precision engineering down to the last detail. The additional LED indicators are fitted perfectly into a long, narrow groove.
M specific roof spoiler.
The M specific roof spoiler with its prominent shape ensures more downforce on the rear axle at higher speeds. At the same time, it lends the three-quarter rear view characteristic sportiness and promises highly dynamic driving experiences.
M Sport seats.
The multi-adjustable M Sport seats with bucket seat character and partly integrated headrest provide excellent lateral support for the driver and front passenger. In addition, the backrest width can be individually adjusted. Their special design with illuminated M logo highlights the vehicle's athletic capabilities. (The M seat belts shown above are expected to be available from 8/2019.)

M leather steering wheel.
The M leather steering wheel including multifunction buttons, the M badge, chrome detailing and an integrated driver-side airbag has the Double-spoke design. Featuring a steering wheel rim in black leather with colour contrast stitching and contoured thumb rests, it feels great in the hand. The driver can also use the M Drive buttons to select the desired settings whilst driving.
M gear lever.
The switch for choosing the three Drivelogic shifting settings is next to the M logo on the upper side of the M gear lever. The P button for the parking lock is directly beneath them. In manual "S" mode, the driver can shift gears manually using the selector lever in typical M fashion; in "D" mode, shifting occurs automatically.
M specific instrument cluster.
The M specific instrument cluster features four displays – speedometer, rev counter incl. shift lights, fuel gauge and oil temperature – as well as a status indicator for the M Driving dynamics systems – steering, suspension, engine, Drivelogic and M xDrive. The Info Display can be individually adjusted and shows the exterior temperature and on-board computer functions, for example.
Start/Stop button.
The red Start/Stop button is located in the centre console and is used to start the engine without a key after the vehicle has been unlocked. It can also be used to stop the engine. The vehicle key is recognised automatically, without having to insert it.
Door sill finishers with Competition designation.
The driver and front passenger are welcomed by door sill finishers with the “X3 M Competition” designation as soon as they get in. The designation on the inserts in Black in the door sill finishers in the front on the left and right radiates quality and exclusivity.
M seat belts.
The M seat belts* with belt tensioner and belt force limiter have a finely woven-in accent in the typical M colours and emphasise the very high-quality and sporty ambience in the interior.

Exclusive design.
Exclusive design elements highlight the dynamic potential of the BMW X3 M40i and BMW X3 M40d both inside and out. This includes features such as larger air inlets, grille frame, kidney slats and mirror caps in Cerium Grey, along with sport seats, the M leather steering wheel with gearshift paddles and the exclusive M40i designation on the instruments, door sill finishers and rear.
M leather steering wheel.
The M leather steering wheel including multifunction buttons and an integrated driver-side airbag features the three-spoke design. With a steering wheel rim in leather 'Walknappa' Black with black stitching and contoured thumb rests, it provides a direct, athletic steering experience.
Sport seats for the driver and front passenger.
The individually adjustable Sport seats for the driver and front passenger feature numerous manual adjustment options, including backrest width, fore-and-aft position, and the backrest and seat angle. Thanks to taller seat and backrest bolsters, and well-defined side bolsters, they provide excellent ergonomics and a high degree of lateral support.
M Aerodynamics package.
The M Aerodynamics package underscores the vehicle's athleticism and modifies its airflow. The package includes a front apron with larger air inlets, special side skirts and a rear apron with a diffuser insert. The tailpipes are chrome.
Driving dynamics and agility.
The BMW X3 M40i and the BMW X3 M40d offer outstanding precision and agility. The dynamic lateral and longitudinal characteristics are increased, and intensive driving pleasure assured, thanks to the comprehensive new calibration of the suspension, the M Performance-specific calibration of the variable sport steering, the standard M Sport brake and a BMW xDrive all-wheel drive system with emphasis on the rear wheels.
Adaptive M suspension.
The Adaptive M suspension can be electronically adjusted at any time to suit the road and driving conditions. The driver can also adjust the suspension characteristics via the Driving Experience Control to enable their preferred driving style at the time – from comfortable to extremely athletic with markedly agile handling.
M Sport brake.
The M Sport brake has four-piston fixed callipers at the front and two-piston floating callipers at the rear in dark blue with the M designation and features large brake discs to ensure an outstanding braking performance.
M Sport exhaust system.
The M Sport exhaust system delivers a dynamic sound, which is determined by the driving mode and modified via the integrated exhaust valve mechanism. The SPORT and SPORT+ programmes, which can be selected via Driving Experience Control, are accentuated by an even more intense engine sound, while the comfort-oriented programme prioritises more discreet engine acoustics.
Steptronic Sport transmission.
The 8-speed Steptronic Sport transmission offers incredibly sporty gear changes. Whether automatic or manual using gearshift paddles or gear lever - for comfortable coasting or incredibly dynamic driving. In SPORT mode and with the gear lever in the lefthand S/M position, the gear shifts are configured for maximum performance.
Variable sport steering.
The Variable sport steering with Servotronic creates a direct and agile steering response and ensures less physical effort is required to turn the wheel. It reacts to the angle of the steering wheel with varying steering ratios. This improves handling when driving more dynamically and reduces the effort needed to steer when parking and turning.

Driving Assistant Plus offers greater comfort and security during monotonous or complex driving situations. These can include traffic jams, stop-and-go traffic or long journeys through the city, on country roads or motorways, along with navigating junctions and lane changes.
Parking Assistant Plus.
The equipment package Parking Assistant Plus makes parking and manoeuvring the vehicle easier. It features Surround View including Top View, Remote 3D View, PDC as well as a lateral parking aid, the Active PDC emergency braking function and the Parking Assistant with linear guidance that provides fully automatic parking both parallel and perpendicular to the road.

The full-colour BMW Head-Up Display projects information relevant to the journey directly into the driver's field of vision, thereby allowing them to fully concentrate on driving. Information such as the current speed and, depending on the equipment, navigation directions, Speed Limit Info including no-overtaking indicator, along with telephone and entertainment lists are displayed. The BMW Head-Up Display of the BMW X3 M and BMW X3 M Competition also comes with an M specific display (Please see image).
Navigation system Professional.
The Navigation system Professional incl. 10.25" LCD colour display and Radio BMW Professional with DVD drive comes with more than 20 GB of memory e.g. for audio files. It is operated intuitively via the iDrive Touch Controller and seven functional bookmarks or alternatively via the Touch Display.
